International Finance and Macrohistory
Advanced Studies Program sequence description:
This ASP teaching sequence is composed of two PhD-level courses.
The Macrofinance course taught by Prof. Schularick will familiarize students with advanced research in macrofinance. A particular emphasis will be placed on causes and consequences of financial stability, on the link between credit markets and economic activity, as well as portfolio heterogeneity, asset returns, and inequality.
The International Finance course taught by Prof. Horn and Prof. Trebesch focuses on international finance, with an emphasis on sovereign debt, capital flows and crises. We will focus on cutting-edge contributions in the literature.
The course is structured around three main topics
- Sovereign risk, international lending, and debt crises
- Cross-border capital flows (FDI, Equity, Credit) and financial globalization
- Geopolitics and international finance (focus on China and official capital flows)

Teacher
Moritz Schularick (Kiel Institute)
Moritz Schularick is president of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy since June 2023 and Professor of Economics at Sciences Po (Paris). His research includes financial markets and asset prices, issues in monetary macroeconomics, and the causes of financial crises and economic inequality.

Christoph Trebesch (Kiel Institute)
Christoph Trebesch is Director of the Research Center International Finance at the Kiel Institute since April 2017, as well as Professor of Macroeconomics at Kiel University. Trebesch works at the intersection of international finance and macroeconomics, economic history, and political economy. In particular, he is an expert on sovereign debt, financial and debt crises, China’s role in global finance, and the economics of populism.

Sebastian Horn (Kiel Institute)
Sebastian Horn joined the Kiel Institute for the World Economy in the winter semester of 2024 to head “The International Financial System” research group. At the same time, he is a professorship in “International Finance” in the Department of Economics at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Hamburg. His research focuses international finance, in particular on sovereign debt and financial crises.
