Christoph Trebesch is Director of the Research Center International Finance at the Kiel Institute since April 2017, as well as Professor of Macroeconomics at Kiel University. Trebesch works at the intersection of international finance and macroeconomics, economic history, and political economy. In particular, he is an expert on sovereign debt, financial and debt crises, China’s role in global finance, and the economics of populism.

 

Currently, his main research focus is Geoeconomics. In 2021/22, he founded the Kiel Initiative on Geopolitics and Economics and created the widely covered Ukraine Support Tracker. In 2023 he was awarded a prestigious ERC Consolidator Grant for his geoeconomic project on “International Finance and the Great Powers, 1800-2020”.

 

After his doctorate at Free University Berlin in 2011, he moved to the University of Munich as assistant professor before joining the Kiel Institute. He has been a visiting researcher at Harvard, Yale, Berkeley, and the Chicago Fed as well as a consultant and/or advisor for the IMF, the World Bank, the United Nations, the US Treasury as well as the German Ministry of Finance. His work is regularly cited in leading international media such as the New York Times, The Economist, or the Financial Times.
