The authors Sebastian Braun, Nadja Dwenger and Thomas Oechsle show that there is a clearly negative statistical relationship between the average school-leaving grade in a federal state and the chances of success for attaining a study place. The chances of high school graduates to qualify for a restricted degree program mainly depend on their high school graduation grade. The authors recommend to reduce performance and valuation differences between the federal states and to align the educational levels upwards.
