GES to Stage Conferences at Kiel Digital Week

The GES is an international forum for resolving global problems established by the Institute for the World Economy (IfW), which regularly meets in Kiel. This year, for the first time it will present three thematically linked conferences. In addition to international issues, such as creating inclusive and sustainable global supply chains, the focus will be on regional impacts on Schleswig-Holstein's economy.

The conferences are also part of the Think 20 (T20) process. The T20 is a coalition of think tanks from the G20 countries whose purpose is to submit research-based recommendations to the heads of state and government of the 20 leading industrialized and emerging economies (G20). The findings of these conferences on digitization will thus be incorporated into the T20 process and serve to lay the groundwork for future G20 summits.

The three conferences are expected to attract a total of around 400 attendees and speakers, among them Schleswig-Holstein's Minister President, Daniel Günther, and the minister of state responsible for digitization, Robert Habeck. The primary sponsors of the GES conferences at the regional level are the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Federal State of Schleswig-Holstein, the city of Kiel, the Leibniz Information Centre for Economics, and consulting firm KPMG. National and international partners include the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Friede Springer Foundation, and the German Research Foundation (DFG).

The three GES conferences:

The focus of the conference entitled Schleswig-Holstein in the Digital Age will include the effects of digitization on the national and regional labor market and cybersecurity.

The conference on Developing Inclusive and Sustainable Global Value Chains in the Digital Age will discuss solutions for creating economically and socially sustainable international supply chains.

Shaping Digitalization at a Global Level has an academic focus and will look at the skills people need in digitized work environments and the emergence of global digital standards.

The conferences will be held at the Kiel Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Kieler Kaufmann Hotel. To date, the GES has staged a major interdisciplinary conference in Kiel every two years—most recently in 2015. This year, the regular GES session was incorporated into the T20 Summit GLOBAL SOLUTIONS in Berlin to mark the German G20 Presidency.
