Global economy prize Laureates 2016

With just a few weeks to go before the awarding of the Global Economy Prize 2016, the Kiel Institute for the World Economy has been informed that economist Oliver E. Williamson, nominated in the Economics category, is unfortunately unable to attend the award ceremony in Kiel for personal reasons. The prize will therefore not be awarded in this category in 2016. "We very much regret this and intend to award the prize to Oliver Williamson in a future year," said Prof. Dennis Snower, President of the Kiel Institute.

It is central to the Global Economy Prize that the prominent laureates have the opportunity to present themselves and their initiatives in person in Kiel and to engage with the winners from other categories.

The nominees in the Politics and Business categories, Mario Monti, former EU competition commissioner and Prime Minister of Italy, and German publisher Friede Springer, respectively, are due to attend the award ceremony as scheduled. The ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 19, at the “Haus der Wirtschaft” building in Kiel. The German Minister of Finance, Wolfgang Schäuble, will give an address.

The Global Economy Prize has been awarded since 2005 by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy and its partners, the City of Kiel and the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Commerce. The prize is intended to honor those who have proposed creative, path-breaking initiatives to deal with globalization and who dare to envision a more wholesome future by addressing the global problems of our time. It is awarded annually to influential personalities in politics, business and science, who have made an outstanding contribution to establishing a just and protective society based on individual initiative and responsibility.
