Kiel Institute for the World Economy successfully evaluated

Following an evaluation in autumn 2018, the Leibniz Association attested the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW Kiel) very good scientific achievements in its various fields of work and praised the expansion of policy advice at national and international level. This is the conclusion of the evaluation report now published by Leibniz, which forms the basis for the Institute's public funding for at least another seven years. Under its new President Gabriel Felbermayr, the Institute can thus continue its successful work on a financially secure basis.

Since the evaluation seven years earlier, the positive development of the Institute has continued, the research and advisory services have been further increased, according to the statement of the Senate of the Leibniz Association. The Senate rated the nine work units of IfW Kiel in which the research and advisory services are provided as "excellent" (one work unit), "very good to excellent" (three), "very good" (three), and "good to very good" (two). In addition, the Senate particularly emphasized the interdisciplinary cooperation with the University of Kiel as well as the increase in high-quality scientific publications, the activities in international policy consulting, especially during the German G20 Presidency in 2017, and the participation in the Joint Economic Forecast for the Federal Government.

For the future, the Leibniz Senate recommended, among other things, further sharpening the thematic focus of the research program, expanding the Institute’s own infrastructure for research data and expanding the dissemination of findings to the public and increasing participation in public debates.

"This very positive assessment of IfW Kiel by the Leibniz Association confirms that the Institute has performed outstandingly in recent years. My thanks for this go to all employees. For me as the new President, this is an excellent basis and an incentive for all of us to further improve our performance, accept new challenges and start further projects," said Gabriel Felbermayr, who has headed the Institute since 1 March.
